February 2011 Meeting Video + Minutes

Meeting PowerPoint 2/28/11 Download

Meeting Minutes:

12 – 12:15 – IHI Official Chapter Photoshoot takes place in front of the school. Great turnout! Shirts and members look awesome.

12:15 – 12:25 – Patient Safety Debate. We sent the following case to all students: Mrs. Taylor (a pseudonym), a 52-year-old woman with severe pneumonia and impending respiratory failure, was evaluated on the medical ward of a community hospital by Dr. Harris, an internist. Dr. Harris chose to immediately transfer her to the intensive care unit (ICU) for urgent intubation by a critical care specialist. During intubation, Mrs. Taylor had a cardiac arrest, which resulted in permanent brain damage. Dr. Harris was sued for malpractice.

We featured a live spirited debate to discuss a patient safety case. Two teams were pre-selected to argue whether or not Dr. Harris should’ve been sued for malpractice or not. The debate resolution was: Dr. Harris should be sued for malpractice because it was mainly his fault that Mrs. Taylor suffered harm. The Affirmative team was Cristina Carpintero and Nicole Cruz. The Negative team was Marc Arenas and Melinda.

12:25 – 12:35 – Members discussed the debate and how they felt on whether Dr. Harris should have been sued. Shawn went over some of the more salient points of the debate discussing both sides of the argument.

12:35 – 12:45 – Video Vignette. The second half of the meeting was focused on watching a Patient Safety Video Vignette where a patient suffered harm during a surgery and the efforts that her anesthesiologist went to in order to create healing for the patient and her family.

12:45 – 1:00 – Guided group discussion. A class discussion about how to communicate with patients who have suffered harm due to medical errors took place after the video.
